POLICE officers in Basildon are being given additional stop and search powers tonight following concerns about violence and disorder.

A statement from the essex Force this evening (Friday, 18 November) says: " We have received information indicating there may be people intent on committing acts of violence and disorder in the Laindon, Basildon and Pitsea areas this evening.

"As a result, and to protect the public and keep you safe, an order under Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 has been made.

"This means officers can now stop members of the public without having reasonable grounds to do so and is an extension of the stop and search powers we use responsibly and effectively on a daily basis.

"As a result, we have an obligation to make the public aware it's in place, the area it covers and the time period it's in place for.

"The Order will be in place from 6pm today (Friday 18 November) until 7am tomorrow (Saturday 19 November) and covers the area shown in the map, inclusive of Basildon, Pitsea, Vange and Laindon and all train stations within the District."

Basildon District Commander Dan McHugh, said: "The decision to use these enhanced stop and search powers is not one that's taken lightly and is done so to keep the public safe. I want to reassure the public and the local community that you may notice an increased visible police presence in the area highlighted. My officers will be there as a preventative and proactive measure to detect, disrupt and effectively deal with any potential violence or disorder.

"I want to thank the public in advance for their support and patience."
