POOLICE officers will be out and about in increased numbers in Basildon this evening (Tuesday, 2 February) as following an incident in the Roundacres area yesterday where a man in his 70s was stabbed.

It is the second violent incident in recent times in the locality. Last month (Saturday, 9 January) three men jumped in front of a 35-year-old man as he rode his bike through the underpass between Long Lynderswood and Westgate Shopping Centre at 8am.

One punched him and another threatened him with a knife before searching his pockets, taking a sum of cash.

Following the latest incident police say officers will be carrying out increased patrols in the area to offer reassurance to the community.

District Commander for Basildon, Chief Inspector Chris Bradford, said: "I know this will be a concerning incident for people living and working in the Roundacre area. Fortunately incidents like this are rare and you're really unlikely to be the victim of violent crime here.

"In the last year we've seen 130 fewer incidents of violence where someone has been injured.

"My officers are carrying out increased patrols in the area and the assault is being investigated by specialist, highly skilled detectives.

"If you have any information about the incident I need you to come forward and report it."

Anyone with information or who witnessed yesterday's assault, or who can identify the man described, is asked to contact Basildon CID on 101 quoting crime reference 42/19034/21.

You can submit a report online Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
