Girls one match away from national final

By Neil Speight 13th Mar 2022

BASILDON Rugby Club's girls team have won through to the semi-finals of the national age group cup.

They did so thanks to a 27-10 victory against Worthing, getting off to a flying start with a try under the posts within three minutes from Lucy Lawford- Wilby which was converted by team captain Jess Ingram.

This quick start set the pace for the next 30 minutes. The forward pack were dominant with hard hitting carries and great off-loading.

This kept Worthing pegged in their half for most of the opening 20 minutes. With lots of line beaks from the backs and forward pressure, Basildon scored again this time, Martha Smith going over for the try.

Worthing came back hard from the restart and some great handling from their backs was rewarded with a try in the corner just before half time.

The second half started with the same intensity from both teams as the first half. Basildon and Worthing were contesting hard and showing great skills.

Tries from Kiera Muir and a second try from Lucy Lawford -Wilby kept the score board ticking over in Basildon's favour.

However constant pressure and good ball handling from Worthing was rewarded with a try from their winger. Basildon's Jess Cocket scored in the dying minutes sealing the win for the home team.

Up next are Kingsbridge in the semi-final on 27 March.
