CAMPAIGNERS in Wickford arev waiting nervously for a meeting tonight which should decide the fate of an open space in the town.

Wickford SOS (Save Open Space) was formed by residents objecting to the sale of Wick Green. The campaign group launched with the full endorsement of Wickford independents during their 2019 election campaign.

Tonight a meeting of Basildon Council is due to debate reversing plans to sell the site.

A statement for the campaigners says: "Hopefully we are at the finish line 28 months after the campaign launch with Wickford Independent David Harrison.

"We started with a petition gathering 468 residents objecting to the sale of Wick Green. Followed by a letter writing campaign which all seven Wickford councillors responded to fully supporting and endorsing the campaign to save Wick Green.

"Key moments in the campaign include:

- Wickford Independents even forgot their respondences in writing to resident campaigners.

- Raised questions at Basildon Council

- Cllr Buckley held a emergency general meeting of Basildon council Feb 1st , 2021 calling for a consultation on Wickford Town Centre

- 798 resident responded to the resident poll made from Cllr Buckley Feb 1st at motion calling for a Wickford Town centre

- the new administration announced at the inaugural council meeting they Would be saving Wick Green, it's good to see politician following up on their campaign pledges and commitments.

Wickford SOS would like to thank Cllrs Buckley, Jeffery, Morris, Holliman and Dadds for their support through the 28 month campaign. It's not over but assuming tonight's policy and resources goes to the recommendation, Wick Green has been saved for now.

"We'll then be finishing up working with local councillors for more permanent protections of the Green."
