A supermarket chain is being ordered to "make its mind up" about redeveloping a derelict shop in Wickford.

Asda is expected to take over the former Co-Op site off Golden Jubilee Way, Wickford, with local MP Mark Francois insisting "the time for hesitation has passed."

Mr Francois also demands a meeting with Asda bosses to discuss the plans.

Developer Heriot UK has submitted plans for the new shop and 72 flats to replace the derelict store in a proposed £30 million redevelopment.

The old Co-Op closed in May 2022, due to the lease expiring. Plans had been agreed for a new Morrisons, but the chain pulled out after concerns about its viability.

During a debate in the House of Commons, Mr Francois said: "We still have the major outstanding issue of what will happen to the old Co-op supermarket site. I very much hope Labour-led Basildon Council will agree to pass Heriot's planning application.

"Finally, given it's an open secret, across the whole of Wickford, Asda has been talking to the developer for over a year now, the time really has come for Asda to make its mind up either one way or another.

"I very much hope it will, which is why I have asked to meet personally with its executive chairman, Allan Leighton, to try to obtain formal confirmation of this. The time for hesitation has passed; I hope Asda will proceed and that my constituents can have a supermarket in Wickford that is fit for the 21st century."

Speaking after the debate, Mark said: "I have fought hard to get this project moving because Wickford residents deserve better. It's time for ASDA to make its mind up and I will continue to press them at the highest levels, including seeking a direct meeting with ASDA's executive chairman, Allan Leighton, to help finally deliver this vital store for my constituents."

In 2023, Heriot UK unveiled new plans for a supermarket and 138 flats at the site with an underground car park. The firm says it's an  'excellent opportunity' for regeneration, which is expected to create around 300 new jobs.

Asda was contacted for comment.
