A CHILDHOOD friendship between a Basildon girl and a Turkish family that has stood the test of time has resulted in an appeal to try and help the friends whose home and livelihood has been devastated by the bush fires sweeping through a holiday resort.

Kirsty Gratton is hoping South Essex residents will be kind enough to support a fundraising page she has created to help the family of Hasan Karademir, who she first met as a 12-year-old more than 26 years ago.

She recalls: "We have all stayed in contact ever since. My family have been over to Turkey and they have met up with each other many times."

Kirsty continues: "I am sure you have all heard about and seen footage, of the devastating wildfires in Turkey. One of my friends, Hasan – who we know as Sam - , who I have known since I was 12 years old when my family went on holiday to Turkey, has had his livelihood destroyed overnight.

"Sam, who ran the apartments we stayed at with his brother, has spent years building up his business for him and his family, only for it to be burned to the ground in the awful fires.

"There is nothing that can replace the memories they have there, but I am hoping that by raising some funds for Sam and his family, this may ease the financial burden a little. Anything at all that you can donate, no matter how small, will be appreciated and it will go a long way.

"In the unlikely event that the funds could not be distributed to Sam due to any unforeseen circumstances, the funds will be donated to charity."
