POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman was assaulted and injured in Basildon last night (Tuesday, 6 July).

The injury is believed to have been sustained as part of an aggravated burglary at a property in Polsteads, which occurred just before 8.30pm.

A police statement says: "At this time we do not believe anything was taken, but we understand that the men were armed with knives.

"Fortunately, the victim, a woman in her 40s, did not suffer serious injury but she is, understandably, shaken by the incident and is being supported by officers.

"At this time, we believe that this was a targeted incident and there is no risk to the wider public.

"We are now appealing for members of the public to come forward with further information to assist our enquiries.

"It is believed that up to six men - some described as white and the others as black - left the area in a large silver, saloon-style car.

"We need anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious, or may have doorbell, CCTV or dashcam footage that can help us, to get in touch.

"Anyone with information should call Basildon CID, quoting incident number 1196 of 6 July.

"You can also submit a report online here where you can use the 'Live Chat' button to speak to an online operator between 7am and 11pm."

Information can also be given to independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
