BASILDON'S Towngate Theatre is to play host next month to one of the most iconic operas.

After a long wait because of coronavirus the highly-acclaimed Russian State Opera is returning to the UK to tour and will be performing tragic opera Madam Butterfly at the Towngate on Friday, 11 March.

Puccini's Madam Butterfly is one of the most colourful and exotic operas and the tour will feature an impressive cast, accompanied by a large live orchestra with more than 30 musicians.

Few operas can match the tragedy and sorrow of Madam Butterfly. Set in Japan at the turn of the last century, it is the story of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride whose self-sacrifice and defiance of her family leads to tragedy.

The story was interpreted for the much acclaimed musical Miss Saigon. But the UK tour offers the opportunity to see it performed in its original operatic setting.

More details and booking facilities are available via the Towngate's website here.
