BASILDON and Billericay MP John Baron could be a surprise contener for the pending Conservative Party leadership.

In the wake of a turbulent week in British politics that culminated in the decision by Prime Minster Boris Johnson to quit runners in the race to replace him are declaring themselves.

Mr Baron hasn't quite does that but says he is seriously contemplating running and he will canvas opinion and speak to colleagues over the weekend.

He says: "Recent events have shown that integrity and compassion have been a lower priority than they should have been within our political system. These principles are paramount for the proper functioning of Government.

"I am being encouraged by my local team and others to put my name forward and this I am now considering. I would be a newcomer to the contest and do not yet have the required eight signatures but will take soundings over the weekend."

 "We need a fresh start. Whatever my decision, I do believe there is a wealth of experience and talent on the back benches and I hope this comes together in support of solid candidates in order to give the membership the widest and best possible choice."
