A FURTHER delay has been announced in the opening of Basildon's new town centre cinema complex.

The company behind the scheme, Empire Cinemas, had hoped to open the ten screen complex earlier this year but then announced October was the new target date. But it is now not likely to open until December.

The project is seen as key to the regeneration of Basildon town centre. A spokesperson for the council said: "Works are underway. Empire Cinemas is committed to opening the new cinema in Basildon town centre but building the very best moviegoing experience is a huge undertaking, involving partners all over the world."

Regeneration portfolio holder Cllr Craig Rimmer, added: "In addition to what the cinema has to offer, the complex will bring Basildon town centre to life and provide a variety of permanent jobs to local people."

Up to 60 jobs are expected to be created.

In August fears were expressed for the future of Basildon's existing cinema complex, at the Festival Leisure Park.
