THE new leader of Basildon Council has set out his commitment to a friendlier, more collaborative way of working as his administration begins its term in office.

Cllr Andrew Baggott says he is keen for Basildon's political leadership to set aside its differences with opposition members for the greater good and to be guided by residents on what is best for the borough going forward.

Cllr Baggott said: "I was concerned to read comments on social media yesterday which cast aspersions on the professionalism of officers, to whit. A comment that "officers cannot stand him (from another member).

"In 16 years on this council I have never had cause to question that officers would make such an unprofessional comment. I think that all members need to give a little more thought on what is posted on social media"

"We welcome strong and incisive scrutiny from the opposition and that must continue but this change of administration brings an opportunity to reset the relationship and how we work with officers, the public and each other.

"I have been a councillor for 16 years and officers have always conducted themselves with the utmost professionalism and integrity. We will not allow unfounded social media comments that say otherwise to stand.

"We give our commitment that we will listen to residents about what they feel is right for our borough and we will be judged on our delivery of their priorities rather than personal attacks.

"As we move out of the pandemic it is crucial that we pull together in the same direction to bring future growth and prosperity to our borough."
