HAVE you got a young person at home in need of an exciting after school activity?

Then why not sign them up to the Fire Cadets scheme run by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.

Applications have just opened for Fire Cadets, a nationally recognised three-year fire service focussed programme for young people aged 13 -17. The Service currently have 18 Fire Cadet Units based at Clacton, Dovercourt, Great Baddow, Harlow, Orsett and Southend.

During the programme, the Cadets take part in a variety of operational fire service activities aligned to the National Fire Cadet Award. These include hose running, ladder pitching, pumping, breathing apparatus, search and rescue, first aid, control room procedures, science of fire and much more.

Applications are open until 30 June, for a new cohort which will start the 40 week programme in September.

Christina Prior, Duke of Edinburgh Cadets and Business Support Assistant for the Service said: "Fire Cadets is an amazing programme for all young people. Not only does it equip individuals with firefighting skills, but it also empowers young people to become leaders and positive influencers within their communities."

Fire Cadets also have the opportunity to work towards their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

Once the Cadets have completed their first year, they will demonstrate everything they have learned to their families and friends at a special "Passing-Out" Parade.

If you know a young person who would love to be a part of the Fire Cadets, you can apply here.
