CONSERVATIVES have retaken control of Basildon Borough Council after winning ten of the available 15 seats in Thursday's election.

Altogether the Tories took 49 per cent of the total vote with Labour's share slipping to 23 per cent.

Three seats changed from Labour to Conservative and that was enough to break the control of the Labour – Independent alliance which had run the council since 2019.

The bad result for Labour brought about an immediate resignation of its local leadership by Cllr Gavin Callaghan, who managed to retain his seat in Pitsea North West but quickly announced he was stepping down from the helm of the council, recognising the change of numbers, and also the leadership of his group.

Among those who lost a seat was Basildon mayor David Burton-Sampson, who was ousted from his St Martin's seat.

He said: "I am obviously gutted to have lost my seat. However, I have been privileged to have helped so many residents over the last five years and to have had a part in driving some real positive change in Basildon. Onwards to the next chapter!"
