THREE scooter riders carrying out a mercy mission were injured thanks to the shocking state of a Basildon Road.

Every year a group of scooterists set out from the base of one of the Essex scooter clubs to give out toys and donations to Basildon Hospital's children's ward and their latest ride was on Sunday (17 December) ward.

On the run there was an accident on Uppermayne involving a couple of scooters, both who received injuries.

One of the riders caught a deep rut in the road, which caused an unseating and another scooter didn't really have an option but to crash into the machine in front of him on the floor.

Three people suffered injuries and, ironically, ended up at Basildon Hospital courtesy of the East of England Ambulance Service.

Two were kept in for treatment but have since been discharged, though care is ongoing. One suffered six broken ribs, the other a broken femur which required surgery to pin it together.

The scooterists have criticised the state of the road, which appears to be caused by a botched repair. Another of the riders on the run said: "In speaking to the police afterwards, they said they had complained about this "repair" for years."

Nub News has contacted Basildon Council and asked for a comment on the state of the road but the authority has not responded.

A statement from Essex Police says: "We were called to reports of a collision in Uppermayne, Basildon, at about 11.55am on Sunday 17 December.

"At the scene we found a two vehicle collision involving two riders. Three people reported injuries and were taken to hospital in the care of the ambulance service.

"Officers controlled traffic at the scene and left Uppermayne about 12.40pm.

"No arrests or further disruption has been associated with incident."
