WICKFORD Town Carnival - and an open day due to be held at Basildon Fire Station tomorrow (Saturday, 10 September) - have been called off as a mark of respect following the death yesterday of Queen Elizabeth II.

An announcement by the carnival committe says: "Carnival '22 and Funday at Nevendon park is to be postponed, in a mark of respect to the passing of the Queen.

"We are a proud community lead organisation, that recognises we cannot celebrate on our big day for the town, with the country in a state of mourning.

"We ask for understanding at this difficult time, with it being so close."
