Bid to build thousands more homes

MORE than 2,500 new homes could be built in and around a south Essex town as more developments are submitted for planning approval despite local resistance.

Billericay could see as many as 2,690 new properties built, mostly on farmland and the greenbelt around the town, sparking local concerns of "urban sprawl" forever changing the nature of the area.

The latest plan, by CEG Land Promotions Limited and Fredrick Gordon and Co Limited, is looking to build 310 new homes, a children's play area, and new roads on land close to Greens Farm Lane.

Plans also include a new pedestrian and cycle link from Greens Farm Lane to Outwood Common Road Central and open landscape areas with walking routes.

The planning documents state: "Prioritising pedestrian and cyclist movement, the aim is to create a well-connected site that facilitates seamless connections to surrounding neighbourhoods in a fast, efficient, and high-quality manner. The proposed development, guided by a landscape-led masterplan, aims to create a strong connection between residents and the surrounding landscape through an extensive green infrastructure. The proposed development will be a highly sustainable development that provides access to a range of sustainable transport options, reduces carbon emissions, and ensures resilience to the effects of a changing climate."

Earlier this year Basildon Council was blasted for agreeing too many plans, with campaigners saying the council will have "blood on its hands." There are countless other plans for the area, totalling well over 2,500 homes.

Other proposals awaiting a decision from the planning committee include 800 homes on farmland in near Southend Road, Great Burstead. The council has already agreed plans for 480 new homes off London Road despite concerns from local residents.

Other approved applications include developments on Kennel Lane, Southend Road, and Maitland Lodge, which together with pending applications in London Road and Mountnessing Road, will create over 1,100 new homes, all on greenbelt land in Billericay.
