COUNCILLORS have welcomed the news that Wickford has won Best New Entry at the Anglia in Bloom competition for 2024.

Wickford also received a Silver-Gilt in the Large Town Category of the annual competition.

The Wickford in Bloom community group formed four years ago, entering the prestigious regional 'In Bloom' competition for the first time this year, also supported by Wickford Wombles, The Friends of Wickford Memorial Park and the Friends of Wickford Cemetery.

To support the group in their efforts, Basildon Council awarded £4,000 in funding and arranged additional clean-ups in Wickford High Street to support volunteers and their efforts.

Additionally, the council supported installation of a new guttering system to collect more rainwater for watering – ensuring an environmentally friendly supply of water for Wickford in Bloom.

Judging for Wickford in Bloom took place on Tuesday, 16 July.

Judges commended the overall presentation of Wickford during the judging process, awarding the town a Silver-Gilt in the main award category – only one tier lower than a Gold award. This is uncommon for a town entering for the first time and a testament to the efforts of the community.

Cllr Jack Ferguson, Basildon Council cabinet member for culture, sport and community, said: "Wickford in Bloom is a fantastic project generating pride in the town centre and surrounding areas. Volunteers are central to making Wickford in Bloom a success and it's fantastic to see local people taking pride in their shared spaces.

"I am delighted that the town has been so successful on their very first entry to Anglia in Bloom.

"It's a prime example of what our communities can achieve when we come together. I hope Wickford's example inspires other towns in the borough to give serious thought to their own community projects and I look forward to seeing how Wickford prepares for next year's competition!"

A representative from Wickford in Bloom said: "On behalf of Wickford in Bloom the committee would like to say a huge thank you to Basildon Borough, Essex County and Wickford Town Councils for their support over the last few years. We would also like to thank our sponsors and most importantly all the willing volunteers who really make it all possible.

"We are so pleased to have received a Silver Gilt award for Wickford and that is also with the support of the Friends of Wickford Memorial Park, Friends of Wickford Cemetery and the Wickford Wombles who were part of the overall entry to Anglia in Bloom."
