SOUTH Basildon MP Stephen Metcalfe has welcomed news that the government will be funding further improvement projects for buildings at local schools.

It has been announced that more than £450 million in extra funding will be available to upgrade school buildings across the country. That will include projects at Great Berry Primary School and Basildon Lower Academy.

Mr Metcalfe said: "We have a world-leading education system but we must continue to invest in safe, warm and energy efficient classrooms so pupils have the facilities they need to study effectively and succeed.

"That is why I welcome news the Conservative government is investing into our school buildings across the country, including our local schools.

"Every school should have access to high-quality facilities and our investment will deliver this so pupil can develop the skills they need for their careers as we grow the economy."

Mr Metcalfe also recently highlighted cash that has been set aside by the government to improve local club and sporting facilities, with James Hornsby High School, Basildon-based Hashtag United FC and Perry Street Girls FC among those to benefit.

He said: "Grassroots facilities are essential for nurturing future sporting talent and encouraging people to get active which benefits their physical and mental wellbeing."
