MP calls out council for lack of policy on street homelessness

THE MP for South Basildon has delivered a critical judgement on Basildon Council's policy on street homelessness.

James McMurdock says: "Street Homelessness is great stain on this nation. Its existence is the result of decades of policy failures from both Conservative and Labour Governments. "

"Last year I asked Basildon Council to provide us with their full policy for preventing street homelessness. We were shocked to receive the following appalling response from them on the 14th October 2025:

'Currently, Basildon Council does not have a policy relating to preventing street homelessness.'

"In the face of such inadequate policy failure, it is important that we all do our bit to protect such vulnerable people who have been let down so badly by our government and local councils."

"Street Link is a national service which can be used by members of the public if they see people sleeping rough. Referrals can be made online at Street Link. This service aims to connect rough sleepers with appropriate services, both statutory and voluntary.

"Street link will then arrange for Street assessment teams to visit the area where the individual is sleeping to offer support."

"By doing so you could literally be saving someone's life or preventing serious illness or injury."

A few years ago we had a couple who were homeless living in one of the council owed garages near my home. This couple lived in the garage for a good few months before being moved on by Basildon Council. He told me that he had lived with his mother in a council house and when she died instead of passing the tenancy to him, they made him leave and made him homeless. Basildon Council couldn't care less about people who live in the borough.
