DESPITE recent upbeat news about the maternity unit at Basildon Hospital, the trust that runs it and hospitals in Southend and Chelmsford says the region continues to suffer from a shortage of midwives.

Last month Nub News reported on the caring work carried out by nurses in the maternity unit at Basildon which had been recognised with an award.

However, staffing remains problematic for the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. Units at its three battling staff shortages following resignations, latest figures show.

The trust says though it has managed to recruit 33 new preceptor midwives – newly qualified midwives who undergo a period of training on the job – it adds: "There remain midwifery workforce challenges at all three maternity units. Interim arrangements are in place at Basildon Hospital in order to support current leadership challenges. There is a risk that recruitment may be unsuccessful due to challenges in culture and clinical activity.

"The midwifery workforce remains a particular challenge due to midwives continuing to resign – moving out of midwifery for work life balance."

And it's not just midwives in short supply, the trust adds "Recruitment for four consultants is in progress. The trust would require another four to six consultants to be compliant."
