BASILDON police have thanked residents for a positive response after they mounted a significant operation acros the town yesterday evening (Monday, 31 October) in a bid to thwart crime and disorder.

Officers received information indicating there might be disorder in the Laindon and Pitsea areas, possibly involving weapons so issued a proactive order under Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 which gave officers authority to stop members of the public without having reasonable grounds to do so.

This morning police issued a statement saying: "We would like to thank those members of the public we spoke to whilst out and about keeping everyone safe. It was great to hear that many residents felt reassured that officers were patrolling and engaging with the local community.

"During this deployment we stopped and searched 65 people, and arrested one suspect on suspicion of robbery.

"We also arrested another suspect on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and controlled drugs. Police Officers also issued two community resolutions. The team also seized a machete, cannabis and balaclavas.

District Commander, Chief Inspector Dan McHugh said "Authorising the use of enhanced stop and search powers is a valuable tool in keeping the public safe. I am pleased that my Officers were able to take weapons and drugs off the streets in our continued efforts to reduce violence and bring offenders to justice. I also want to pass on my sincere thanks to the local community for their support."
