FOLLOWING the appointment of Mel Stride as the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Basildon and Billericay MP John Baron has announced he has thrown his hat into the ring for a top job at the House of Commons.
Mr Baron is standing in the election to be chairman of the Treasury Select Committee. His nomination papers listing the first 15 supporters were submitted yesterday, and the election will be on Sunday, 9 November. All MPs, regardless of party affiliation, are eligible to vote.
Mr Baron said: "I congratulate Mel on his new appointment, and if successful in the election intend to carry on his excellent work of scrutinising the work of the Treasury and other financial institutions. I would like to thank my supporters for nominating me, and look forward to the coming election."
"Since leaving the Army, I have gained considerable experience of financial markets having worked in the City as a fund manager while being a Director of Henderson Private Clients and then Rothschild Asset Management, and as a monthly columnist for the Investors' Chronicle (fees are donated to charity). I also speak at financial seminars and have written the Financial Times Guide to Investment Trusts, which is now in its second edition. Since leaving the City, I also have smaller company experience within the financial sector."
"As a One Nation Conservative I believe that a prosperous economy, coupled with sound finances, is not an end in itself but provides the best opportunities to help those less fortunate. Clearly the economic situation is challenging, but compassionate policies can get us through these tough times together."
