ESSEX County Council is to spend £500,000 on funding a new group to tackle fears about public safety following issues highlighted by the death of Sarah Everard, it was announced this evening (Thursday, 1 April).

A Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with the murder of Sarah Everard following her disappearance while walking home across Clapham Common last month. The outcry over the tragedy has highlighted public fears over safety, particularly that of women.

The group - which has already had its first meeting - is led by Essex County Council and will work with the police, women's groups, support organisations, other partners and residents.

Topics ranging from street safety, workforce safety and education will be explored. Residents will be invited to get involved and share their ideas and experiences.

An Essex County Council spokesperson said: "The aim of the group is to gain a better understanding of the real fears people have about safety and look at how these concerns could be addressed.

"Essex County Council already works closely with the police and partner agencies in respect of public safety, however it is hoped that this group will further encourage public engagement and encourage a two way, meaningful conversation with residents about the issues and fears they have so that resources can be best allocated to where they are most needed."
