FIREFIGHTERS extinguished a fire in a maisonette in Basildon last night (Wednesday, 6 April).

Crews from Basildon, Rayleigh Weir, Corringham and Wickford were called to Rochester Way at 10.01pm.

The ground floor maisonette was completely alight and a large amount of smoke was being produced.

It was initially reported that a person was inside so crews entered the property.

Station Manager Lee Hurst said: "The fire was well developed on arrival so I'd like to praise the Incident Commander, Watch Manager Adam Barber, and all the crews who did a fantastic job in extremely difficult conditions.

"Thankfully no-one was inside the property and crews also checked adjoining properties to make sure occupants were safe."

A woman who suffered smoke inhalation was left in the care of the Ambulance Service.

The fire was fully extinguished by 11.12pm. An investigation will be carried out to estabish the cause.
