Date set for new town pub opening

A NEW multimillion-pound Wetherspoons in Basildon is set to open towards the end of September, the pub chain has announced.

Building work on the 'Sigered, King Of Essex' pub in Basildon town centre is to start in May. Wetherspoons will spend £2.75 million on the development, which is planned to open on September 23.

It comes after Gavin Callaghan, Labour leader of Basildon Council said the pub "should" be serving customers by the autumn. It was initially expected to open last November, then bosses said it would be open this summer.

Cllr Callaghan said: "Workers for the Wetherspoons are due to go in and begin work, and they tell me that will be a four to five-month turnaround. By the autumn, we should have Wetherspoons open in Basildon Town Centre."

Last June, the major chain revealed new images of how the pub's interior could look. The pub chain's former site in the town centre, the Moon on The Square, closed in late 2022.

The town centre is having a huge facelift, with various major developments. East Square has been transformed into a new complex with a Vue Cinema, Nando's and other restaurants. Work is underway on almost 500 new homes on the former Wetherspoons site off Market Square, Basildon. Plans are agreed for 245 homes at the former Great Oaks Retail Park, off Great Oaks, Basildon.

A spokesman for Wetherspoon said: "Building work is set to begin on the new pub in mid-May, with the opening date expected to be 23 September 2025, subject to change. The cost for the development is £2,750,000 and the new pub will be called Sigered, King Of Essex."
