IN the latest move surrounding the future of Laindon Community centre councillors have agreed a plan to consult with residents.
Controversy has surrounded prospects for the centre, which has become something of a political hot potato in the area with rival groups criticising each other.
That is despite council leader Cllr Gavin Callaghan making cast iron promises. His Conservative political rivals have fiercely criticised the management of the closure and possible reopening of the centre.
Members of the Neighbourhoods and Public Spaces Committee approved a consultation plan for Laindon Community Centre last night (Wednesday,10 March).
It was agreed that officers were to bring back a report to committee detailing the findings of the consultation and how future services could be delivered.
Basildon Council took over the existing Laindon Community Centre site from the Laindon Community Association after it handed over the keys in November last year.
Following an inspection the council was advised by its insurers to secure the building whilst it is out of use.
Chairman of the committee Cllr David Harrison said: "Laindon Community Centre was in need of major investment before the current pandemic and we will consult with the community to see how best to get this vital community asset back."
"A public consultation will be launched enabling the local community the opportunity to shape its future and we would encourage as many people as possible to get involved.
"We are working hard to find alternative space for existing activities at other nearby clubs for when government guidance permits and we will be in touch with further information."
