A REFORM UK councillor was handcuffed and arrested by police officers inside Basildon Council's offices today (Monday, 8 September). 

Cllr Sam Journet has often been at the centre of controversial debates and has repeatedly clashed verbally with members of the ruling Labour group.

This afternoon Basildon Council issued the following statement: "In response to recent concerns regarding inappropriate conduct by a member of the Council, Basildon Council implemented restrictions last week limiting access to staff-only areas of the Basildon Centre. 

"These measures were introduced to prioritise staff safety and maintain a secure and respectful working environment.

"Despite these restrictions being clearly communicated to all council members, one Councillor repeatedly disregarded the rules. "Earlier today, the individual in question was arrested and removed from the premises by police."

Pictures of the arrest have circulated on social media. 

A further statement by a council spokesperson added: "Following repeated public disorder in the council offices, harassment of staff and councillors and trespassing into areas of the council they are not permitted to be in, a councillor was this morning arrested by Essex Police officers in the council building and taken into custody.

"The council will make no further comment."

Essex Police issued the following statement at 5.30pm: "A man has been arrested at Basildon Council offices on 8 September on suspicion of stalking and harassment and a public order offence.

"The arrest relates to an investigation into allegations of a man aged in his 30s being harassed online and in person.

"A 31-year-old man from Basildon is currently in custody for questioning."
