BASILDON Council is working with community groups across the borough to create stunning wildflower meadows in our parks and open spaces.

Planting is about to be undertaken in partnership with local community groups within Lake Meadows, Cranfield Park, Wickford Memorial Park, Kent View Road, Northlands Park and Gloucester Park.

The council is also sowing a wildflower seed mix on eleven roundabouts within the borough for the third year in succession, as well as continuing with our relaxed mowing regime along roundabouts and grass verges to further improve biodiversity.

The planting of wildflower meadows is one element of the council's Pollinator Action Plan, which aims to increase biodiversity through a number of different initiatives that maximise improvements to our borough's natural environment.

Chairman of the Leisure and Environment Committee Councillor Craig Rimmer said: "We want to make our open spaces even more attractive for residents to enjoy.

"The natural wildflowers that will form from our relaxed mowing combined with the seeded mix being laid will be really visually impactful across our roundabouts and parks.

"It will also have a big impact on our borough's biodiversity, allowing for wildlife to inhabit the areas, providing nectar for pollinators, and contributing to a reduction in air pollution.

"I can't wait to get to see the colourful array of flowers start to bloom as we move through Spring."
