BASILDON Borough Council has approved the appointment of Gary Jones as its new permanent Chief Executive.

Mr Jones, who lives in the borough, brings with him more than 20 years of experience in local government, having worked his way up to his current role as Operational Director for Housing and Community Safety at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

Cllr Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council, said: "Throughout the selection process Gary impressed us with his deep understanding of council services, his commitment to data-led decision-making and his passion for improving community outcomes.

"I set some key criteria at the outset of this process to ensure we found the right leader to guide us through the challenges ahead. We needed someone who could connect with staff at all levels, understand the complexities of our diverse communities and bring fresh ideas and commercial acumen to help us think strategically about the future. Gary has demonstrated all of these qualities, and I'm confident he will be an asset to our organisation.

"Gary is committed to improving staff morale, a key priority as we move forward after a period of change. His approachable and empathetic leadership style will be vital in fostering a positive work environment, and his experience in a similar-sized unitary council means he has the insights necessary to ensure we continue delivering high-quality services across all five towns in Basildon."

Mr Jones said: "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside Basildon's dedicated staff, members and partners on the plans that will benefit residents and businesses in coming years.

"Basildon is where I've made my home and that means I've more than just a professional stake in the future of our borough – it's personal too."

A statement from the council says: "Mr Jones has more than 23 years of experience in Regulatory, Environmental, Community Safety, Housing, and Enforcement sectors, including more than eight years in senior leadership roles. In his current role as the Director of Enforcement, Regulation, and Community Safety at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, he has achieved significant improvements for residents.

"He has been instrumental in fostering collaborative working relationships with partners such as the Metropolitan Police, businesses, and the voluntary sector, resulting in a reduction of crime and disorder in public spaces in Barking and Dagenham.

"This includes targeted work to address violence against women and girls and serious violence.

"Gary has also been instrumental in transforming services under his leadership. A strong advocate for workforce development, he introduced a new apprenticeship programme creating opportunities at varying levels to attract local talent including young people, care leavers and existing staff wanting to upskill. The programme has just been shortlisted for an Investors in People award.

"Gary holds a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Health and a number of leadership and management qualifications.

"Gary lives in Basildon with his family and enjoys using the green spaces across the borough. He has a keen interest in wildlife photography and enjoys being outside with nature which gives him the opportunity to slow down and disconnect from the fast pace of everyday life.
