Anger over poor state of local roads and mounting number of potholes
By Matthew Critchell LDRS 4th Mar 2026
ANGRY lo cal folk have hit out over 'ridiculous' potholes and road maintenance in basildon.
Laindon residents want action over issues in King Edward Road, not far from the Fortune of War junction on the A127.
They fear 'only half are done' after workers were sent out to fix the pothole-ridden road.
Essex County Council says it has to 'address the most critical issues first.'
Former councillor and local resident Pat Rackley, said there are "big issues" with potholes.
The Laindon grandmother added: "The council has only fixed half of them. Which is ridiculous, the road is as bad as it was before. It's been awful there, people are using Roberts Road. We thought it was great it's being fixed but only half are done.
"There's a bus lane which is meant to have priority but obviously it doesn't. It's disgraceful and an absolute waste of money. I have major issues and concerns with it. Nobody wants to use it because it's so bad now. It's all of us, it's about the quality of our lives."
The county council is responsible for around 5,000-miles of road across Essex, including footpaths, lighting and other highways matters. The council also says all issues and repairs reported to are "assessed by an inspector and addressed accordingly."
Shelly Gull, 45, also raised "serious concerns" and demanded action on the "disgusting state of the roads." She added: "We pay our taxes for all this. It's affecting everyone and it gets you down a bit too. It's all anyone talks about and some of the holes are quite deep."
A spokesperson for Essex Highways added: "It is sometimes necessary for us to carry out temporary 'make-safe' repairs.
"These let us work quickly to protect residents while long-term solutions are put in place. We greatly appreciate residents' patience and encourage them to track any issues reported to us via our online track it."
