TRIBUTES have been paid today to a charismatic and popular showbiz figure in South Essex who has passed away after contracting Covid-19.

Comedy entertainer Johnny Clark became well known to thousands of people during his years as the MC and host at Canvey Island's Kings Club.

In recent years he worked in Thurrock at Langdon Hills Golf Club were he hosted a large number of events and organised many charity functions - helping raise tens of thousands of pounds for local and national good causes.

As a member of the Comedians Golf Society he brought many famous faces to the club to play in charity golf days.

Known as a zany comic he was immensely popular with local audiences but he became established further afield in the UK and home and abroad as a much admired comedian.

His talents as an after dinner speaker, auctioneer and corporate event co-ordinator were always in demand.

Mr Clark, who lived with his wife Trudi, at Kimberley Road, Benfleet, died today (Tuesday, 19 January) after contracting Covid-19, after a number of members of his immediate family also contracted the bug.

Many friends and fans have already paid tribute to him.

Darren Nafi said: "So sad to learn the passing of Johnny. He was a legend in his own right with the Gang show and entertained us all for many happy years" while Paul Webster said: "A part of my growing up at kings. He was a natural entertainer. Me and my friends still use some of his gags to this day! My thoughts are with his family at this time."

Danny Lawrence from Basildon Gateway 978, who knew Johnny, said: "He gave me my break 40 years ago at Kings Canvey and we have been friends ever since.

"All his pals are devastated by the news. He really was a legend."
